Two Months on with the Comes with Music Service
For those who are looking to get the “Comes with Music” service on their phone I thought it would be helpful if I posted my thoughts after having the service a little over two months. The “Comes with Music” allows you to have access to millions of tracks for free when you purchase a Comes with Music phone.
I’ve discovered some bugs with my service and some usability issues. I would also like to know how you are finding your service so please do not hesitate to leave a comment.
What I am not so impressed with…
Tells me that my 5800 is not registered, I will now be paying for music?
Check out the screenshot on the left. The Nokia Music Store has decided to tell me that my device is no longer registered with the store and that I will be paying for any music that I download. I’m pretty sure I was logged in at this point and for the message to say “This is not your Comes With Music mobile device”, I was shocked to say the least. It did not recognise me and my phone and wanted to get some money. So that’s how they pay their wages?
No download whole album feature on phone
You can download the whole album that you like on your computer quick and simple. It takes one button and you schedule your 15 tracks or so to be downloaded. When you go to do that on a mobile phone, it’s a different story. Nokia have not added support yet for downloading multiple songs or scheduling on your mobile phone. Check out the screenshot on the right, it shows you what you are presented with when you want to download an album.
The problem is that on my Nokia 5800 there is a green button like on the right for downloading the whole album. Many people would expect the whole album to start downloading but it only takes you to the screen on the right where you have to download each song individually, which can be time consuming.
It is time consuming because every time you download a song, you have to wait for a message to come up that says “1 song added to Music library. Open playlist of recently added songs in Music player?”. Seeing as the 5800 is not lightning fast, it can be a pain having to wait for this message to come up, even if its a second.
Does not remember me being logged in, says I’m not logged in but I am
This is something that has only started happening within the last few weeks. The log in to Nokia Music Store via my phone and upon loading the homescreen of the store I am still presented with the bright red and orange bar which says “SIGN IN”. Not only does that bar annoy me, why the hell is it saying I’m not logged in? The funny thing about it is I am still able to download music tracks as the system recognises me as being logged in. It just displays that red bar there for no reason.
Licencing issues
All this DRM business is starting to bug me and the sooner Nokia remove it, the better. All I want to do is download my music and have no issues listening to it. I have no problem only being able to play it on my computer and Nokia 5800 as they are the two devices that I play music through.
For example, the other day I wanted to download the late great Michael Jackson’s album “BAD” from the music store. Upon downloading the album I went straight to my recently added playlist. Look at the screenshot on the right. You see the little key icon with a red line across it? Well that says that the licence is not verified.
Usually you could just play the song and the licence would be found by the software within the music file, but no, I kept getting several errors that would not find the music file. In the end I just deleted all my music and went back to installing everything which I will tell you about in the software section.
Nokia Music Software… end of
Here is one of many screenshots that I could have taken but I will stick to the main one that was a huge problem. I recently wrote about how you can fix the error “Database Column Out of Range” but that was after I had deleted all my music, uninstalled Nokia Music one hundred times and also deleted all the music tracks off of my 5800. The error was something to do with a database problem and this gives me the concern that Nokia may have some serious underlying programming issues with their service.
Oh and the Random Errors…
Just to add insult to injury, here’s a screenshot of the random errors I kept getting at regular intervals during my wrestle with downloading music. Maybe I caught the store at the bad time but I could have wrote my phone against the wall. I then realised that doing that would not solve anything!
Something new to add since writing this post, I can no longer download music on my phone. I am experiencing troubles downloading the songs as I can not request the licence at all. Every time I request a licence, I get the screen on the left. It’s now left for the laptop to do all the work, I wonder how long Nokia Music will work on this before I am unable to download anything?
What I’m still impressed with…
Apart from the essay of issues that I have listed above, there are some positive points about the store that I would like to point out.
The Ease, Speed and Choice of Downloads
Once I had got my issue sorted, I could not complain with the ease of download. The Nokia Music Store on your PC is pretty quick to load when you don’t have any freezing issues. You can log in to your account with one click and the search function allows you to find the music you want within seconds.
If you have a speedy internet connection, you can download songs within around 10 seconds. I downloaded a whole album in about 2 minutes and definitely quick enough. The navigation of the music store on your phone and your computer is extremely simple. On my 5800, the buttons are big enough to press, the text is well spaced out. Nokia did their ergonomics well.

Music Vault
I think Nokia planned to have issues with their service so they covered themselves by added the Music Vault. This is a record of all the songs you have downloaded from the Nokia Music Store. By having this I am able to download all my music again if I manage to lose a song or delete it off my phone/laptop. This was a life saver considering I had to start from scratch again!
In Conclusion
I think we can see that the number of negative points here are seriously outwaying the positives but we still have to remember the music that we are getting. Once I get Nokia Music to work properly (I haven’t experienced errors all the time, yet) I am able get all of the latest music quickly and the transfer process between my laptop and my phone is extremely quick.
I would love to see the issues that I am experiecing patched up so that I can use the service with no doubts. I am slowly building my music collection up and doing it legally thanks for the “Comes with Music” service. I hope this review gives you a further insight in to the service before purchasing it.
