this review (if you can call it that) doesn’t do the software justice. ignore the odd wording and limited functionality described here, and focus instead on a simple list of facts concerning this software (i don’t work for skyhook, i’m actually a customer: i bought maps booster and love it).
1. maps booster speeds up the time-to-first-fix. not by doubling the performance as the review appears to say, but actually lots faster than double. time to first fix is about 1.5 seconds now. A-GPS (you know, normal gps sped up using cell towers) time to first fix is typically 30-60 seconds. that’s a 20x performance boost using conservative numbers.
2. the benefit is not only when you are inside with lots of wifi around you, but also when you are outside. yes yes maps booster uses wifi for the so-called WPS (wifi positioning system, as opposed to GPS: Global Positioning System). but WPS is not ALL. They combine it into XPS, the hybrid positioning system. this uses wifi and gps data together with cell tower triangulation to create a composite off all of the above. in short, this means that maps booster has a beneficial affect even without any wifi nearby.
For me, it is most beneficial for STATIC POSITIONING. I think this is by design, the XPS system is not well suited for DYNAMIC POSITIONING. What this means is, when you are not moving (ie: not driving, etc) Maps Booster finds your location almost instantly and makes this location available to any application that could use the built-in location system on your nokia. Dynamic positioning, on the other hand, is when your location is changing over time – for example while you are driving. In this case Maps Booster seems to have no beneficial affect.
On my N97 the standard GPS is so abysmally poor that the Accuweather widget can almost never figure out where I am to tell me my local weather conditions. Instead of using the GPS I have had to store my home town in it and just use it as though I had no GPS. Now with Maps Booster the Accuweather widget figures out where I am instantly every time I start it (read that again: EVERY TIME). It’s awesome! Would this be worth the $3 charged on Ovi Store if it only helped get the weather? Maybe not. But it doesn’t only help with weather: EVERY APP THAT TRIES TO GET MY LOCATION STATICALLY BENEFITS. Want another example? sure: geotagging photos. I gave up on this before maps booster, most of my photos had no GPS data added because the phone couldnt get a fix when i was taking the pic. Now, I turned on the feature and every pic is geotagged. Brilliant!

Im desperate to purchase this program for n97, but ovi store says its not available for my country (australia) yet skyhooks website says australia is covered. Is there another way to purchase/install. If someone could email me instructions or even the .sisx file
