Everyone seems to be enjoying battering Nokia phones these days. N97Geeks put the N97 to the test and now we’re seeing Nokia Conversations pumel a new “hard man” device.
In today’s roundup we bring you news about Symbian^2, a Vodafone widget competition, videos, news from our favourite themer, opinions that the Nokia N97 will beat the iPhone 3G S and also Nokia talks about having wearable equipment to control smartphone devices. Enough to read for a while eh?
Nokia Phones Controlled by Accessory
I recently found this story on Gizmodo who are not liking Nokia much at the minute, it has to be said. I don’t know why but with an idea like this in the pipeline, they somewhat have a point.
The idea involves creating items that you would wear to control the Nokia phone. From the diagram we can see that it includes a ring, bracelet, finger tip (oh dear) and glasses. We agree with Gizmodo on this one that the only piece of equipment that you would consider are the glasses and the ring.
Do let us know your thoughts on this one.
New Open-Source Symbian OS to be Released this Week (beta)
Our Symbian smartphone future is being shaped from this point on when the beta version of the new Symbian OS is released. The new Symbian OS is called Symbian^2 and combines older Symbian models, S60, MOAP, and UIQ.
Nokia purchased Symbian a while back and tracks are now being made on the OS which they hope can be adapted for many devices in the future. Nokia has made the right decision in making the development open-source so people can contribute on it’s creation and change. With other operating systems like the iPhone and Android, it’s about time Nokia put something together.
Another interesting point to add is that devices that would be able to support the new versions of Symbian are the Nokia 5800, N97, Samsung Omnia HD and the Sony Ericsson Satio. These are currently S60 5th edition devices that are in need of loving treatment.

Vodafone Launch Summer of Widgets Competition
I don’t create widgets very well but I might have to start learning again, especially when you could win a Samsung NC20 netbook and a Nokia N96 if your widget is chosen. Here is the caption that you will be interested in straight from the website.
“Each week during the competition, three netbooks (Samsung NC20) bundled each with a Nokia N96 handset, will be awarded to the three best new widgets entered into the Competition (on Betavine) and uploaded to the Vodafone widgets developer platform.
Running from 6th July to the 30th August, the Summer of Widgets competition will offer three prizes every week to the developers who have submitted the best widgets based on easy of use, creativity and value to the potential user.”
The competition is open from the 6th July 2009 until 30th August 2009 so you have over a month to get your entries in. The prizes are awarded for ease of use, creativity and also value for the potential user.
General Manager of Nokia believes that the N97 will Push the iPhone 3GS aside
It’s good to see a lot of confidence coming out of Nokia, especially when the world is making quick judgements of their new flagship device, the N97. Mike Loughran has come out with all guns blazing and said…
The new iPhone is an evolution rather than a revolution and for people trying to decide whether to get a Nokia N97 or an iPhone, it comes down to a decision on performance and value for money… The new iPhone seems to have the same design and colour, upgrading from a sub-standard two-megapixel camera to a still low 3.2-megapixel camera, and is probably a disappointment for many people given the high tariff and lifetime ownership costs.
Well Apple, go smoke that one? Not quite. He talks about the hardware issues and the tariffs but he fails to mention the software on the phone. Did he know that the Symbian platform is falling behind at the minute? The iPhone 3GS has made the most of it’s features because of the software and applications available to it.
