This is an interesting video on the N97, it highlights what a new user to Symbian 5th edition would experience and it’s another way of understanding what needs to be improved on the Symbian OS. Although I don’t agree with some points in this video, there are definite areas of concern. Update

$700 (usd) for that, My RadioShack TR-80 had a better touch screen with the light pen

    What’s up Phat?

Updated the post title to reflect the video a little better, I did pick a completely rubbish title to be honest!

quite obvious that the n97 fails, if there are crying babies nearby.

Well, i think this is a bad portrayal of Nokia on purpose by engadget.

First of all, my personal opinion is that the way of using the touchscreen by the person in the video is wrong. The best way to use S60v5 is in one hand with the thumb for the best touch experience. Well there definitely may be problems, but even iphone and other phones also do hang up. So its not just Nokia

I don’t have any problems getting around with the touchscreen. I even manage to ‘click’ on very small links without problems. So I agree with Hary: you have to do it in the right way. If your fingers are too unsubtle, use the delivered stick. I love my new N97

Hey smartass, it’s not the devices fault if you don’t lnow how to used, on the facebook part before to log you have to click on “DONE” becouse what you are doing there is changing the desktop, so please before bullshiting yhe device learn how yo use it!!!

Funny. I do get the point that the UI & software might not be 100% perfect, but I think this video totally over-exaggerates this.

Actually Robert, you’re just assuming everyone one would know that. The fact that the sign-in button appears when it can’t even be used is actually a terrible usability flaw – one they should be embarrassed about. The whole principal behind good usability is that you shouldn’t have to learn how they want you to use the software – it should just ‘make sense’ and not introduce any doubt or confusion.

By that token, if there is a sign-in button visible, there’s no reason to think you wouldn’t be able to click on it. But this particular widget gets it wrong – the sign-in button should appear ONLY when it’s able to clicked on, not any time when it can’t. This means, the software has failed the person, not the other way around.

I’ve had my N97 going on 3 weeks now and it’s full of rudimentary usability flaws. With each passing day I find another reason for Nokia to be embarrassed, and I regret ever getting the N97.
