Nokia will NOT be Running Android by September

by Nokia Applications on July 6, 2009   in Nokia News

nokiaandroidWe have woken up this morning to a rumour that has shocked us. Nokia has invested so much money in Symbian that a move to Android would have completely destroyed trust in what the consumer was going to get.

As a consumer, I know that when I buy a Nokia phone I am going to get the Symbian OS. So as quickly as we have heard this news, we can confirm after speaking with Nokia that they will NOT be running Android by September.

There is another argument that the UI on Nokia phones that are running Symbian is quickly falling behind the likes of the iPhone but we are taking a similar view to a lot of people. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. The Symbian OS has been around for such a long time that a lot of people have developed trust in it and there are people that are still in love with the the UI on Nokia devices.

Nokia is also developing another OS called Maemo and this also defers the claims that Nokia will be going to Android. Maemo is in development and it makes you wonder, “Why would Nokia want Android when they have Symbian S60 5th edition which is reletively new? and with new tablets in the works, Maemo would be a nice addition to the market”.

Update: A press statement here has backed up that Nokia will not be running Android. “Absolutely no truth in this whatsoever” said a Nokia spokesman. Android seems to been given some free exposure out of this one!

What do you think of this news?

I did not believe for second that Nokia would switch from Symbian to Android. From time to time there is these stupid rumours, I don’t klnow who starts trhem or why they do so but it’s sure that Nokia is NOT going to abandon Symbian and switch to Android or something else.

Nokia has invested years and hundreds of millions euros to Symbian. Nokia did recently buy Symbian and they started Symbian foundation for developing it. Nokia did also recently buy Trolltech and Nokia has been working hard to get Trolltech’s QT application- and ui-framework ported to S60. And now some trolls spread rumour that Nokia is going to abandon all that and start using Android???? Yeah right, suuuuurrree yes sir. AND BULLSHIT!!! That is not going to happen. Nokia is not going to abandon Symbian thatr’s 100% sure.

I’ve posted basically the same opinion of yours on a few blogs today. Nokia has put too much in to Symbian to throw it all away in a new line of devices. They have probably seen the new application that puts the Android OS on the Nokia phones by MMMOOO. Got confused and jumped to conclusions.

Symbian has time to develop, a lot of people want it now, now, now.

Yep, but I really hope that Nokia gets their act together, they’re losing market share at an astronomical pace, my heart will always be with Nokia but sometimes you just ’sigh’ when you compare the UI/UX of different smartphones

Maemo is on the current tablets N8×0. Its a Linux based OS, and there has been rumours for years that Nokia would migrate it to phones but as yet little had come to pass on that; The investment in Symbian is great that to mothball would be effectively result in a huge balance sheet loss.
