Typical Nokia – Let’s Downgrade Another Device

So as Carl bought to you earlier, Nokia today introduced its latest Xpress Music device the 5530XM. And low and behold, it’s yet another downgraded addition to their ever growing range of smartphones. In what way does this “New” device bring any enhancements in the form of functionality and general upgrades?
Is it just me or is anyone losing faith in Nokia? Fair enough the N97 brought an improvement on from the 5800, but what else did it bring that was new? Hmm, some live widgets, Brilliant… not!!! Other than this, we had already had a 5 megapixel camera in the N95 and N82. Dual LED flash is rubbish, only the N82 has featured Xenon in Nokia’s line up so far (and that was 2 years ago), erm… what else can I come up with, oh yeh, the Ovi Store FAILS miserably and resistive screens are dated technology too.
Have Nokia not seen rivals such as RIM, Palm and Apple? All these companies are making advancements with each and every device they release whereas Nokia seem to be at a certain point, then go back a year or so, then go forward to the original point again, which consequently is then old. Never do they seem to advance. Symbian s60 is seemingly old and outdated compared to the opposition now and Nokia really need to buck their ideas up FAST.
Back to the 5530 and having a quick glance at the specs, I cannot for the life of me see anything different to the 5800 other than a slightly smaller screen, no GPS and no 3G (which really only effects people who use large sums of data). I’m pretty sure missing out on GPS doesn’t drop the price by $100 compared to the 5800. It has 3.2MP camera with dual LED flash (useless), i’m guessing a resistive display, s60v5, accelerometer etc. Instead of wasting time on creating an “new” device Nokia should have just dropped the price of the 5800 a little bit, then they would achieve more sales. It is aggitating to see them wasting time on new phones which don’t bring any new technological advancements with them.
Nokia Conversations made a big deal about this device (then unknown) with their “pass the parcel” posts and this got a lot of the Symbian community excited thinking maybe a successor to the N97 would be unveiled, but no. We are let down once again, last time I checked we were living in 2009, not 2006. Just release one device a year for each line up: s40, Xpress Music, E-Series, N-Series and then i’m sure people will buy them meaning they will be a success, we do not need countless numbers of devices introduced each and every month. Why not take whats good on your best devices and mix them together to make the daddy of all mobiles.
e.g. s60v5 + N82 Camera+ Capacitive Screen + App Store = Brilliant.
Just my opinion though (Carl disagrees), what do you guys think about Nokia’s lastest XM device? Let us know in the comments below.

Well, to be frank .. i would completely diagree with the topic of Nokia 5530 is a pointless device. I think you are missing the Nokia Strategy here, its not that nokia is always gonna launch a flagship device, they are now trying to capture the touchscreen market by providing device in every range , as done by samsung and LG … I hope you are aware the most popular device till date is Nokia 1100 in terms of sales. Having a large portfolio and trying to target a huge consumer base is the main reason for launch of this device.
Moreover, Nokia N97 is a combination of touch and QWERTY, and to be frank, its near to perfect phone. Xenon flash hardly matter, as far as I think , as you can not use it for video recording, Also, my nokia n95 gives amazing pics in low light condition and N97 image algorithm is highly improved. I believe Nokia N97 has every capability of being a FlagShip model. To be frank difference between Capacitive and Resistive make no sense to me.
This year will see nearly 4 to 5 more TS devices launch by Nokia and an attempt to gain some percentage in this segment.
mainly i just believe nokia should concentrate on producing one device for each series of phones. S40, XM, N-series and E-series. I don’t think nokia can be taken seriously when they are constantly introducing new devices every week.
That’s a fair argument and an argument that I share to. I understood that Nokia need to put a deeper footprint in the market and devices like the 5530 offer the phone to different price ranges. Popular phone do not always have to be the most expensive and the most tech ready. If Nokia produced a phone that improved a lot of the time and went up to the maximum capabilites that we currently have creating phones, then it would be a pretty small market and everyone would be having the same phone.
@Dan – Lol, they are hardly producing new devices each week. These phones have probably been made months before and are released when they want them to show. A new phone is not appearing every week and the phone market would be very small if a new phone was created for each series… Every part of the world has to be catered for and less expensive devices are very popular in parts of the world like Africa and India.
3 devices were announced today, 3 devices going on sale on the 19th. If they had released 5530 then 5800 it’d make sense as its an upgrade. But to downgrade seems pointless to me.
This phone is relesed in the third quarter of 2009. It probably won't go on sale on the 19th June, sometime after.
and btw where i said capacitive was dated technology, it was a typo and i meant resistive
i didn’t say it would go on sale june 19th :/ i said how nokia release multiple phones on the same day. I.e june 19th n97 n85 and 6700 or whatever it is
Ok then, still don't agree with you
You said "Symbian community excited thinking maybe a successor to the N97 would be unveiled, but no." Why would Nokia release a new device that exceeds the N97 before the N97 is actually released…
I'm pissed over the fact that some lower end device now gets a nice metal frame finish while we are stuck with a plastic phone where 90% have a gap in the case.
also showing off a (prototype) phone which has a nicer homescreen feature than the 5800 is like a punch in the face for all those people who complain about the stupid inflexible home screen of the 5800. I mean I seriously doubt we will get the nice n97 look, but this is ridiculous.
daniel kinda agrees with me
I also found out now that the 5530 will have a faster cpu than the 5800… 439 mhz arm11… come on….
Nokia does NOT cater to just the market you’re in. In order to maintain market share, it has to provide for developing markets. Low end devices for maturing markets. What’s wrong here? NOBODY is asking you to downgrade, in fact this is a very very cheap and good upgrade for many phone users in the markets mentioned.
