This morning I’ve been working on something that I’ve wanted to do for a while. It’s a widget for your Nokia S60 phone that allows you to simply click it and it will load m.facebook.com. Why’s this important? Well, the new Facebook app for 5th edition phones is not that good, and the old app that comes pre-installed is not very interactive. The only decent website is the mobile version of Facebook that they provide themselves. Read more and download the widget after the break!

If you’re a frequent user then having the bookmarked Facebook on your homescreen can be annoying as the icon does not look that good. I’ve released an early version of a widget that I hope to develop in the future, Facebook Mobile Widget v0.5. The web version allows you to view notifications unlike the other two apps we have available to us. All you have to do is open the widget up and it opens http://m.facebook.com automatically. You only have to allow network access (on my 5800) and away you go.

Seeing as it’s only the first version I have some things I want to work on:

  • New Facebook icon
  • Add more social networks like Twitter
  • Opens in web browser (therefore adding back to previous page tab)

Please let me know if you have any issues! It should work on most S60 phones, if you have any installation issues, a restart usually fixes most things.

wooo at least no more “bookmark” icon on my homescreen. the facebook icon is better, and at least m.facebook.com doesn’t crash and shizz. this will do untill they update the proper facebook app.
hopefully you’ll learn how to add a back button which would be good.
    Good Lad Mumzy90 :)

    @ mike
you’re lucky then because mine runs slow and crashes every 2 minutes :( so for now im sticking to m.facebook.com

and im waiting for the official facebook app to include Notification updates as the current version doesn’t

I am surprised you don’t like the new Facebook app for 5th edition phones. I have installed on my Nokia 5800 and it’s by far the best mobile version of them all. It’s so smooth and fast and all the possible options one needs are on the front screen.

I like the layout and eye candy stuff but the application doesn’t give you notifications and it seems to be very buggy my end, crashing regularly etc. Dan has experienced this too, have you? I just think the m.facebook.com website does what you need it to do for accessing Facebook and notifies you… I want to develop my widget in the future, it’s just a start but I’m hoping I will learn more things and add them in the near future, thanks for your comment.

This is a nice widget Carl but I think the icon looks a bit ugly on the homescreen, any chance of changing it to be an “F” like the other apps?

  5. Dan says:

he tried it with the F but it didnt look too good. this one looked better.
i like this better than having the bookmark icon on the homescreen (:
updates are coming to it soon though

  6. [...] just like to let you know that I’ve updated the Facebook widget that I created a couple weeks back that allows you to have a nice looking icon on your homescreen straight to the Facebook mobile [...]
