You would think that the 5800′s 88MB of internal flash memory would be more than capable of coping with your everyday usage. In a perfect world this wouldn’t be wrong but with intensive use such as installing and removing third party applications, web browsing and updating your firmware over the air (FOTA), this means that it’s easy for the 88MB to disappear. It has been reported that upto half of this internal memory can be lost through device updates which is in no way good for your device.
Below is the AllAboutSymbian guide to freeing up your 5800′s C-Drive:
- delete large attachments from Messaging
- delete any direct downloads you’ve done
- ‘remove’ any trial applications you’ve installed to ‘Internal memory’
- using a file manager utility to delete the \cache folder on C:
- (if a Google Maps user) by doing ‘Options | Tools | Reset’ – this frees up memory used for cached maps
Below is a list of other methods you can use if you believe the above hasn’t fully freed up your device to its maximum potential:
- Go into “File Mgr”. You’ll find this in the “Applications” folder. Note the current free disk space on the C-Drive which is listed as “Phone Memory”.
- Double-tap on ‘Backup’ and check that ‘Backup contents’ is set to ‘All’.
- Use ‘Options and select Back up now’ to do a backup of the internal memory to your memory card.
- Once the backup has finished, go to the dial pad on the homescreen and tap out *#7370#, which is the code for a hard reset on all S60 devices. This basically wipes your entire C-Drive and makes the phone create all the necessary folders again. Your phone will restart to complete this process but don’t worry if it takes longer than usual to fully boot. (The default lock code for Nokia devices is 12345 unless you have changed this to suit you)
- Once restarted, go back to ‘File Mgr’, to check free space on C-Drive (about 88MB should be free)
- Tap on “Backup” again, but then tap on “Options and Restore”.
- Check all the content boxes and then click on “OK”. It may take some time restoring all of your data back.
- Restart the phone.
- Go back into “File Mgr” and you should see that you now have significantly more free disk space on Drive C.
The only downside to this is that it will take you a minute to organise your app’s in the order you prefer but other than this everything else should still be there.
