Every day I like to read feeds them I am suscribed to via Google reader on my laptop. If you have a Google account, you may already know about the reader they provide to manage all your subscriptions. I also like viewing subscriptions on my Nokia 5800 but this means that I have to subscribe to my feeds again and this can sometimes be a pain. You will also see that when you subscribe to feeds via your phone, the feed viewer sometimes requires you to visit the page to view the post. Very annoying if you’re loading a large site up!
I’ve come up with a very efficient way that connects all your feeds to your phone and your laptop without having to subscribe multiple times to the same blog. The answer is with the mighty Google and it’s reader. If you have not got a Google account already, I recommend signing up here before going any further as you will need one if you want to do this great method. Better still, instead of just getting an account, why not use Google’s massive storage Gmail. This method that I’m telling you about, doesn’t need an application to be installed on your phone, memory saved!
Once that’s done, you will want to log in to your Google reader account on your laptop.

As you can see, I’ve got some feeds in my reader that I need to be reading as I haven’t had time to look at them yet. Anyway, you need to start adding some feeds to your account by clicking the “Add Subscription” link in the top left corner or visiting the blogs that you want to and clicking their subscribe button and choosing to subscribe with Google Reader. The subscription process is pretty simple and there are some Google reader FAQs to help you out if you get stuck.
Once you’re loaded up with some feeds, it’s time to start making the most of your mobile:

- First of all, visit http://google.com/reader on your mobile phone.
- Sign in using your credentials that you put in when you signed up for your Google Account.
- Change your settings if needed.
- Time to take a look at your feeds!
A good thing about Google reader compared to your RSS feed organiser on your phone is that you don’t need to refresh all your feeds that you are subscribed to in Google reader. This means that you won’t have to be annoyed by waiting to see content that you may eventually have to go to their website to view it anyway.
Once you’ve added the feed to your Google reader account online or via your phone as shown below:

It is really that simple when you want to add a feed. If you’re having trouble looking for websites to subscribe to, then Google reader also suggests feeds in categories that you are interested in. Tell me now if your RSS feed client does that!
I know it doesn’t on the default Nokia RSS feed browser.
Once you’ve loaded up the Google feed reader by visiting the URL that I listed in the steps above, you can save it as a bookmark in your phone and then on your Nokia 5800′s home screen for example, you can put one of your icons as a bookmark to the Google reader so you can quickly access the updated feeds. No waiting for feeds to load, easy to use interface and it’s free! It also works on any phone that can load the internet, good times!
Here’s the current display on my Google reader, looks good.

[...] I was getting a little fed up of having to load the bookmark in my internet browser on my 5800 so I decided to create a widget. The good thing about Google Reader on your computer and phone is that you read a post within the web page and nothing new opens so this makes it perfect for my widget. This widget loads google.com/reader and displays as much of the page as possible. It also has a shiny widget icon that you can choose to display on your homescreen or you can simply leave it in your applications folder (shown left). Where I am a regular user of Google Reader, I like it because it shows the same feeds if I connect on my phone or my laptop. It saves refreshing feeds on your phone and Google Reader provides the overall quicker and neater experience. Check out my guide on managing your RSS feeds on your phone with Google Reader. [...]
Great guide – Google Reader is awesome. I always found it a little tricky to use on S60v3, and it doesn’t play very nicely with Opera. However, the improvements to the browser introduced with S60v5 make Google Reader very useable on my 5800!
P.S. What theme are you using? It has a nice font!
Glad you found the guide useful, I didn’t know if a lot of people manage their feeds like I do or just on their mobile. I found this way much easier and didn’t have to subscribe twice to a website, once on my phone and once on my phone.
