Although it is not due on the market untill June, the Nokia N97 has already been subject to a lot of talk. Many are eagerly expecting the device to be the smartest smartphone in the galaxy. The N97 has already been the object of comparison with almost all of the latest smartphone devices from major competitors such as the Samsung Omnia HD, Blackberry Storm, and last but by no means least, the Apple iPhone.

In fact, the iPhone is the subject of this latest comparison with the up and coming N97. Without neglecting the capacity of the iPhone phenomenon, it was discovered that there are quite a few advantages that make the N97 a much more interesting device compared to the iPhone. So lets see how the N97 stacked up against Apple’s all conquering device:
- When it comes to the keyboard, the iPhone only supports the touchscreen technology, whilst the N97, in addition to the touch screen keyboard like the 5800 also has a s;ide out QWERTY keyboard, enabling a lot easier and quicker use for email, text and the web.
- The differences in display and camera are obvious, and the N97 has 360 x 640 widescreen resolution accompanied by a 5 megapixel camera kitted out with Carl Zeiss optics, LED flash and autofocus, against the iPhone screen resolution of 320 x 480 and that abismal 2 megapixel camera which is just about useless considering the lack flash and autofocus. The N97 also features a front facing camera for video calling, yet another thing that the iPhone 3G lacks.
- The N97 has a huge internal memory of 32GB, with the added bonus of expanding the memory using a microSD card of upto 16GB, therefore allowing up to 48GB of storage space for all your media needs. In contrast the iPhone only packs in 8 or 16GB of internal memory along with no option of expansion.
- Finally, the N97 loads the Symbian S60 (5th edition) platform, which is much more popular and mature than iPhone OS. Obviously the S60 interface doesn’t have the glamour and appeal of the Mobile OSX platform of the iPhone but it can be considered a lot more stable. And with the addition of the Ovi store arriving in May it is more than likely to give the App store a run for its money.
In conclusion, my opinion and i’m sure many of our readers opinions are that the N97 looks to be the far better device in comparison to the iPhone 3G but with the rumours gathering pace of a 3rd generation iPhone arriving in July it looks like the N97 may have to be ready to face a much sterner test in the coming months.

better than iphone, nokia v iphoneRelated Nokia Apps:
I fully agree with you. Nokia has been in the business way longer than Apple, and have finally created the companies iPhone-competitor. This will be an interesting summer though, especially as Apple have ordered some new lenses.
I couldn’t agree more. It will be a tough choice come July
