I’m an app-a-holic if there is such a word. I like to try everything on my Nokia 5800 so I wrote a post that included the latest applications that I have installed on my phone. I have tried all these applications on my phone and the downloads that you put on your phone should be working fine when you install it!

Phone Torch

I’ve found this one really handy when I’ve dropped something in the car or I’ve lost something down the back of a cabinet. As long as you don’t leave the flash on for too long, it shouldn’t cause any damage. You have the option to change the colour of the light to red which I don’t see any need for as well as the function to flash light in morse code! You also have some settings available to update the interval which is refreshes, red light settings, morse code interval, light on power on, fullscreen light and flash light.

Nokia Beta Labs Handwriting Calculator

The Nokia 5800 is the first device to support the handwriting function and this application makes use of it very well. With a recent update on the 2nd April 2009, there’s never a better time to download this application and give it a spin. The handwriting application allows you to do maths by just writing the equation you want to do! Calculators on phones can be a pain in the bum as you have to find symbols etc but being able to write it is much easier. BBC iPlayer

If you like watching BBC television programs, then BBC iPlayer is a great application to catch up on shows or just watch something interesting. I wouldn’t use your providers internet to watch video though, will use quite a few megabytes!

Opera Mini

Opera Mini is the popular browser made tiny for your mobile phone. The mobile browser allows you to view full webpages really quickly and then zoom in to the part you want to see. The browser is much quicker than the loaded browser in the 5800 but it does have a few niggling problems that we noticed. There is a lot of clicking about to get to the URL insertion field and then to press ok to load it. Other than that, it’s definitely a great application to have loaded for those moments where you need to visit the larger websites. It also looks pretty too.

Nokia Sports Tracker

This application offers you your all-in-one sports diary that will help you get fitter and be techno whilst doing it! The application is still in BETA but the GPS using application tracks your location and is able to offer you precise statistics depending on what you want it to do. The application can record information such as speed, distance, and time and the results are stored in your application’s diary. Genius.

Mobbler

Mobbler is your access to free music! You can listen to lots of different types of music for free after searching for your artist. Another data intensive one this! It can use quite a bit listening to songs, so wifi is recommended. Please note that you need a last.fm account to use the application (takes two seconds to register).

Google Maps

Does exactly what it says on the tin! Google maps isn’t your best sat-nav but it gives you maps to navigate where you have to go and other handly little features like public transport routes and walking also. Google Maps is also a data gobbler too so, be sure you have the data to use or connect to wifi where possible!
