It is common knowledge when it comes to Digital camera’s that Xenon flash is far superior to Dual L.E.D in low light conditions. This comparison shall focus on the difference in quality when it comes to the 2 components in question.

Nokia seem to like including Dual L.E.D flash with their mobiles, even when it comes to flagship models such as the N95 and the up and coming N97. Whilst Dual L.E.D is good for video recording in low light it is pretty useless when it comes to taking still pictures, often producing purple/bluey patches around the edges of the photo. In contrast, the Nokia N82 is one of only a few Nokia’s ever to have been produced with Xenon flash. This kind of flash is used in stand alone digital camera’s and is great for producing high quality, illuminated photo’s in situations where light is minimal.

Firstly I shall introduce my test devices. I am using my new Nokia 5800 as the test device for the Dual L.E.D flash and I am utilising the Xenon flash of my old Nokia N82 phone. Seeing as the N82 features a truely amazing 5MP camera compared to the measley 3.2MP snapper on the 5800 I am going to lower the N82′s camera quality to that of 3MP in order to make the comparison/test as fair as possible.

I shall demonstrate the difference by displaying a host of images taken in low light conditions, the 5800 and its Dual L.E.D will be featured on the left, with the N82 and it’s Xenon on the right.

As you can probably see from the selection of photo’s above there is no contest between the two with the Xenon flash of the N82 proving to be a clear winner in every aspect (Even only being taken on 3MP quality). As for L.E.D, well it is okay for quick snaps that you will only view a couple of times on your mobile but not something i think anyone would wish to print out. Another note to mention is that the 5800 images seem to have a large amount of purple and green haze surrounding the subjects as mentioned above.

In conclusion, I really wish Nokia would implement Xenon flash on the majority of their devices containing decent camera’s. Some obviously haven’t got the space to include this sort of add on but to many like the 5800 it would have been nice to have included a decent flash. Flagship devices such as the N97 and N86 both feature Dual L.E.D which in my opinion will drive away potential buyers who are looking for a decent 5 or 8MP camera phone. If you are certain you want a mobile to use for taking a lot of snaps my finally advice is to steer clear of L.E.D and head over to an N82 or something similar.

    THANKS MATE !

Thanks very much for these photos … I agree with your comment that all Nokias should have a Xenon flash, especially those in the upper range.

It makes me want to stick with the Nokia 6220 (which although is not in the upper range has a Xenon flash and GPS)

Thanks for these photos as they have made me able to decide with going for the phones with the Xenon flash.
